Work on the redevelopment of Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), including the construction of eight flyovers, footpaths and cycle tracks, is likely to begin early next year. The revamped stretch is likely to be ready by mid-2025.The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has opened the technical bid for the Rs 845-crore project. Six companies have submitted their bids, according to officials. And financial bids will be opened at the end of the month to select the company which will get the contract to complete the project in 2.5 years.
“A committee headed by the GMDA CEO will take the final call on the company. The revamp work will start at the beginning of next year,” GMDA’s superintending engineer Arun Dhankar told TOI.

The project to upgrade SPR has been on the cards since March 2019. The project has been reworked multiple times since then, with GMDA going back and forth between construction of flyovers and underpasses, or a combination of the two, to resolve traffic congestion issues along the road.
The project was finally approved in GMDA’s 10th authority meeting in June this year. While the development authority will be constructing the flyovers at eight critical points on the road, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will build an underpass at Vatika Chowk.
The project will not only benefit the residents of sectors 57-71 but also ease traffic load on SPR. The road has emerged as one of the busiest stretches of the city and traffic is expected to increase manifold from 2026 as new developments in Sohna, Manesar, and along the Dwarka Expressway will start utilising the thoroughfare.

The 12km-long SPR starts from Ghata on Gurgaon-Faridabad road and crosses Gurgaon-Sohna-Alwar Expressway at Vatika Chowk to end at the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway near the Kherki Daula toll.
The redevelopment work includes a six-lane main carriageway, a six-lane service road, 3m-wide footpaths, 2.5m-wide cycle tracks and development of a green belt apart from the flyovers. In addition, streetlights will be installed and traffic junctions along the road will be revamped.
